Rebel star Prabas' new Karunakar directed Darling, produced by BVSN Prasad under the banner of Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra India, is a true family entertainer with no double entendre, no violent stunts and even no item numbers!

It revolves around Prabhas (Prabhas), a fun loving youth, who has just finished his graduation and is yet to make up his mind about his next move when his college mate proposes to him. But Prabhas is not interested and makes no bones about it. The spurned girl dashes home and attempts suicide. Her doting father, a powerful don is unable to digest this. So Prabhas is served an ultimatum. He should either marry the girl or face death. But Prabhas is already in love with Nandini (Kajal) and the girl is in Switzerland. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Prabhas is refreshingly different in this film. He appears down to earth and is quite endearing too. He has improved his expressions and his role per se is pretty, with his silence and a smile in some scenes showing him in better light. Kajal looks nice and bubbly. Her glamour apart, her childlike expressions in some scenes is eye-pleasing.

Music plays a vital role in all of Karunakaran's films, and music by newcomer Prakash is good. Same with the cinematography and Switzerland and Araku have been canned beautifully. The screenplay, replete with twists and turns, sometimes makes you feel a little restless but on the whole it is an entertaining film

Take a Bollywood movie, chop some scenes, add a few others, change the music, use some explosive sounds - and, hey presto, there is a slicker, racier more sexy Hollywood action potboiler. That's what A-list Hollywood director Brett Ratner did to "Kites" that stars Hrithik Roshan and Mexican actress Barbara Mori.

It happened after Reliance BIG Pictures chairman Anil Ambani and co-producer Rakesh Roshan casually asked him over dinner what Ratner - creator of the spectacularly successful "Rush Hour" series - would do if he wanted to release "Kites" in the US.

"When I saw the movie I thought it was an Indian movie that would appeal to the Western style. A Bollywood movie and somewhat Western in its approach, " Ratner told in an interview over the phone from Los Angeles.

So when they popped the question, he said: "Well, I would do this and this and this, I would shorten it, change the music. And they said, 'can you do it for us?' So I said okay if you want me to. So that's how it happened."

The film is being released in Hindi May 21 and in English May 28.

Ratner took his cue from local Chinese movies released in the US. "They change the music, they change the voices and make it somewhat different to make it appealing to an American audience.

"And that's how I got the idea that this would introduce people that normally would not see a Bollywood movie to Bollywood cinema, " he said. "And I love films, I love foreign cinema."

"For me it was just an experiment. It was fun for me. I didn't do it to get rich. I did it out of friendship and I love filmmaking, " Ratner said, agreeing "they could not afford me as a director, may be." But here "I acted more like a producer than a director".

So how did he go about it? "No nothing was re-shot. I just cut the movie, and kept the story, " he said. "For instance, there was a great dance sequence in the movie, but it didn't drive the story forward. So I lost it."

"I was very nervous about losing it. But Hrithik was on board. When they saw my version they loved it."

There was also some footage that "was more racy, more sexuality - stuff that would appeal to international audiences. But they just didn't use it. When I was looking at the footage, I said, 'wow, we have to put this in the movie.'"

Ratner was quite sure "Kites" would appeal to non-Indian viewers too. "Because when you have two stars, who are not typical stars, appearing together in a movie they would be kind of appealing to a different demographic."

Hrithik and Barbara Mori are not "American movie stars. But they have an appeal and a chemistry that works. And that's why I agreed to help. What they had together was appealing."

Barbara has a big following in the Latina world and even in the US. And as such "Kites" will appeal specially to Latinas, Indians and people that normally would not go to see a Bollywood movie, Ratner said. "So I think it's going to be great and that's why I feel so proud to be part of it."

Ratner thinks his version of "Kites" is as slick as a Hollywood movie. "The action scenes were spectacular. But the mix was very much Indian" and "very thin in the sound department".

"What I did was I took pictures that were incredibly well done and I put sound that was so big - the explosions, the cars and the engines and background. I gave it a real Hollywood mix unlike Bollywood movies where voices are in the foreground."

Hrithik, Ratner thinks, is "a great actor" who definitely has the potential to make the Hollywood crossover. "He definitely acted the way his persona is in his character. He is still very cool even though he is foreign. And he is in incredible shape and a great dancer."

Brett said he is 'in bed with Bollywood'. The Rush Hour director wants to plan a buddy cop movie with Hrithik and another big Hollywood star.

"And If I were to make a Hollywood movie with Hrithik, I would put him with an American star."

Having turned a Bollywood film into a Hollywood film, would Ratner have any interest doing a Bollywood movie as a director?

"I would love it. If Reliance will offer me a movie that would appeal to international audiences. I would be interested in doing a Bollywood movie that had American stars that will possibly work not only in India but everywhere else. That will be a fun experiment for me."

And what kind of movie would he choose?

"I would probably do a big Hollywood action movie. Maybe like a 'Rush Hour 4' - about two guys that are like fish out of water in different countries. So maybe I would do a movie like 'Rush Hour' in India. That will be fun."

Pakistan jets take to the skies

ISLAMABAD: Fighter jets of the Pakistan Air Force thundered over the capital, Rawalpindi and Lahore all of Monday afternoon, heightening people’s fears that a war was about to break out any minute with India.

A brief statement from the Pakistan Air Force said that “in view of the current environment, the PAF has enhanced its vigilance.”

The roar of the jets had people reaching for their phones to find out if something serious was afoot. Callers flooded newspapers and television stations for information.

The sorties fuelled rumours that the jets were scrambling to counter an imminent Indian air-strike on Muridke, headquarters of the Jamat-ud-dawah, near Lahore.

Analysts interviewed by television channels said the rising pitch of the statements by Indian leaders indicated New Delhi was seriously preparing for a strike against Pakistan.

Television channels here gave prominent coverage to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s remark to journalists in New Delhi on Monday that India was “not closing any options.”

Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s statement that India was capable of giving a “befitting reply to those using their soil for abetting [in] and promoting terrorism” also got wide coverage.

Pakistan Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani told the visiting U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, Admiral Mike Mullen, that Pakistan “wants peace with India on equal level,” but “no compromise will be made on Pakistan’s defence.”

Five killed as van collides with auto

VIZIANAGARAM: Five persons, including three of a family, were killed when a van and an auto collided head on at Pedamanapuram in Dattirajeru mandal on the NH-43 in the wee hours of Monday. The van was on its way towards Vizianagaram from Jiyyammavalasa and the auto was going towards Bobbili.

The auto that was dragged to a distance was crushed between a tree and the van killing M. Eswara Rao (45), his wife Usha Rani (40) and son Praveen Kumar (10) of Palle Veedhi in Bobbili town, Peda Appala Swamy (55) of Komatipalli in Dattirajeru mandal and R. Rama Naidu (37), truck driver of Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu on the spot.

The driver of the ill-fated auto K. Gavaraju was admitted to K.G. Hospital in Visakhapatnam where his condition was stated to be serious.

The van driver Ch. Shankar and cleaner D. Sankar escaped with injuries.

Inter-district robber nabbed

GUNTUR: An inter-district robber, who allegedly committed various offences in Guntur, Krishna and Visakhapatnam districts, has been arrested by the Crime Control Station sleuths here.

The stolen property recovered by the police was worth Rs.6.53 lakhs. It includes 66 sovereigns of gold, 3.5 kg of silver and four motorcycles.

Presenting the accused person Kolusu Sriramulu and receiver of the stolen property Sk. Kalesha before the media on Monday, Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha said that Sriramulu, who used to work as hotel supplier, had a long history of crime. He even had a Dossier Criminal (DC) sheet opened against him at Repalle police station.

He allegedly committed number of offences at Tenali, Repalle, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Gudivada and Guntur.

A habitual offender, his modus operandi was simple. He used to target houses in secluded areas when the inmates were away and used to break the lock under the cover of darkness. Before he committed any burglary, he used to steal a motorcycle and sell it off after the job is done.

Sk. Kalesha, a small-time cotton trader from Vatticherukuru mandal, used to act as receiver of the stolen property and trade it with jewellery shops.

The police recorded 16 cases of house-breaking at Pattabhipuram, Arundelpet, Old Guntur, Tenali, Patamata in Vijayawada limits, Gudivada and Vuyuur in Krishna district.

The SP complimented CCS Inspector Narahari, Arundelpet Crime DSI K.V. Narayana and Pattabhipuram DSI C.V. Prasada Rao and announced rewards for other police personnel.

Repairs under way, Internet still hit

NEW DELHI: Internet services in the country remained severely affected on Monday even as repairs continued to three major undersea cables — SeaMeWe (SMW) 4, SMW 3 and Reliance Communications’ Flag – between Egypt and Italy in the Mediterranean Sea. The damage occurred last weekend.

Consortiums and companies owning these submarine cables, mainly connecting Europe to Asia, have said it would take at least a week to normalise the situation.

Three Indian companies — Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications and Tata Communications, which fully or partially own the cables, have said the repairs were being carried out on a war-footing. To avoid major inconvenience to customers, they have shifted the traffic via the Pacific route. However, this is causing congestion in both voice and data services.

According to Internet Service Providers Association of India president Rajesh Chharia, congestion and slow Internet speed were being felt across the country. The telecom, information technology and business process outsourcing (BPO) sectors were feeling the heat as these cables are part of the Europe-Asia link carrying the bulk of Internet traffic between Asia and the rest of the world.

Terming the current situation “critical,” Mr. Chharia said: “IT and BPO companies are experiencing very slow Internet access connectivity, while telecom companies have shifted to their back-up mechanism to carry on ISD calls particularly to the Middle East, the U.S. and Europe.”

While Reliance Communications’ cable was likely to be fully functional by mid-week, the other two cables were likely to be repaired by month-end.

Tata Communications, which is part of the consortium for SMW3, managed to control the situation, he said. It strengthened its back-up mechanism after a similar cable cut incident occurred in the Mediterranean region in January this year.

In a statement, Bharti Airtel said: “The voice traffic has been completely normalised. Bharti Airtel is taking all necessary steps to ensure data services are available to its customers by routing traffic on alternative routes like its ‘i2i’ undersea cable.” Reliance Communications said it would take at least a week to repair its damaged cable. Though it has diverted the traffic via Pacific region, customers are facing congestion.

Reliance said its unit, Reliance Globalcom, which operates the Flag cable network, was working closely with its suppliers and partners to build additional capacity to meet year-end traffic.

Suicide attempt: boy dies

Kakinada: A 32-year-old woman, Uma, consumed poison along with her two children Sai Kumar (13) and Sai Ganesh (10) in their house at Valasapakala late on Wednesday night reportedly due to financial problems, when her husband Gowri Sankar was away on duty. Sai Kumar died before being taken to hospital.
Uma and Sai Ganesh are undergoing treatment in a private hospital at Bhanugudi Junction here. The Kakinada rural police are investigating.

Polling Holds Biggest surprise in Jammu & kashmir

Long queues were seen outside almost all polling stations in 10 south Kashmir constituencies which went to polls in the penultimate phase of the seven-phase polls in J&K on Wednesday. All seats improved their 2002 tally phenomenally. People in certain areas like Kulgam insisted that they should be permitted to vote even after polling hours. The Election Commission said the improvement in voter participation was impressive. "Last time, Anantnag polled 7.16% and this time it is 38%. In Kulgam it jumped from 15.27% in 2002 to 57% this time." The overall average for 16 seats was 60%, with 57% in Anantnag and 57% in Kulgam. Barring Anantnag town, where a few protesting groups were chased away by police, there was no visible instance of resistance anywhere. A landmine explosion before polling hours and killing of two Hizbul Mujahideen militants — one of them had escaped earlier this year while being taken to court — by police in a Shopian village failed to deter voters from turning up for polling. Former chief minister Mufti Sayeed Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti cast their vote in Bejbehara. By around 10 am, when brisk polling was reported almost everywhere, Nazir Ahmad Lone, a Forward Bloc candidate from Humshalibugh, was on the highway with dozens of supporters. "I fail to understand what this election is all about. For around two months I have been asking people to vote for my symbol , lion, but when polling started, today , I find my symbol is aircraft.” Nazir's wife Hajira is also contesting on the Forward Bloc ticket from Bejbehara . When alerted, the EC official said: “We will look into the grave irregularity (the change of symbol)." There were 271 candidates in fray for 16 seats in five districts with a voter population of 1.16 million. The number of contestants added colour to the exercise , though it may not lead to a grossly split verdict. Contestants for this phase included former chief minister's Mufti Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad, in the fray from Anantnag and Bhaderwah, respectively. Both segments witnessed improved voting percentage with Bhaderwah jumping to 64 %. In Nowgam village of Shangus, the entire village of 5,000 voters lined up outside four polling stations. They were voting for Imtiaz A Rather, a lecturer who resigned to try his luck in politics. Abdul Aziz, an elderly villager said they were out only to keep PDP away. The village has an interesting grouse with the party. In 2007 when the ordinance depot went up in flame, villagers said only five villages were hit. "PDP got enough compensation but instead of given it all to five villages, they distributed it to 14 villages." "Had they fielded Pir Mohammad Hussain we would have voted for him but the party gave the ticket to his sonin-law whom we do not like for more than one reason" . Apart from Shangus that saw 68% polling, compared to 25.40% in 2002, there are four segments that saw a tight contest. Kulgam, which has remained CPM's pocket borough in the last 12 years is witnessing a wave for a change. But the division of votes could still help Yousuf Tarigami to retain the seat for the third time. Ghulam Ahmad Mir of Congress, who emerged winner in a 25.40% polling in 2002, may find it difficult to retain Dooru that polled 68% on Wednesday. Mir was one of the two former minister who was detained by CBI in the sex racket case. Kokernag saw a keen triangular contest between congres's Peerzada Sayeed (who was forced to step down as PCC chief and later lost his cabinet berth following a corruption case), NC and PDP. PDP has fielded Sehar Iqbal, a UK returned social worker and daughter of a top bureaucrat.

HYDERABAD: Police suspect Bhargavi's make-up assistant might have tipped off Praveen Kumar about the actor's movements in the city.According to sources, Venkat, 19, had been working as a personal make-up assistant for Bhargavi for some time, and Praveen was in touch with him. "The call logs of the cell phones of both Bhargavi and Praveen show calls were either made to or received from Venkat's mobile on Tuesday morning," a police officer told TOI.Since the time they noticed Venkat's mobile number in both the mobile phones of Bhargavi and Praveen, the police been trying to contact him on his cell phone. "It has been switched off. We suspect that he absconded due to fear," the officer said.After attending a film shoot in Palakollu, Bhargavi reached the city on Monday for a scheduled shoot here. Police suspect that Venkat, after calling Bhargavi, might have passed on the information about her being alone in the city to Praveen Kumar.Police said that they had information that Praveen Kumar purchased the dagger in Nellore and boarded a bus to Hyderabad at around 8 pm on Monday night. After reaching the city in the wee hours of Tuesday, he contacted Venkat again.Ramesh, the driver who went to pick up Bhargavi, told the police that Venkat came to the car and kept the make-up kit inside the vehicle. "After that, he told Ramesh that he would be back in a minute after buying cigarettes. But Venkat did not return after that. We suspect that Venkat might have brought the make-up kit from Bhargavi's house," an investigating officer said.The contact address given by Venkat in the application form submitted for a mobile connection is in Chittoor. But the police said Venkat had been staying in the city for sometime now. Police are trying to contact the film and television crew members with whom Bhargavi had worked to trace the whereabouts of Venkat.Meanwhile, the doctors, who performed post-mortem on the actor at the Gandhi Hospital, told the police that she died due to stabbing. "One of her lungs was punctured and heart also suffered stab injury. Doctors said that the two injuries caused her death," deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (west zone) C Ravi Verma said.The suicide note found in the trousers of Praveen Kumar will be sent to the Andhra Pradesh Forensic Science Laboratories (APFSL) for handwriting confirmation. For the samples of Praveen's handwriting, police are in touch with his family members in Nellore.The bodies of Bhargavi and Praveen were handed over to the family members on Wednesday afternoon.

Tendulkar, Yuvraj steer India to victory

Sachin Tendulkar hit an unbeaten 103 as India scored a sensational six-wicket victory over England in the first Test in Chennai on Monday.
The ace batsman, who hit a boundary to not only notch his 41st Test century but also bring about the winning runs, and Yuvraj Singh (85 not out) stitched together an undefeated 163 for the fifth wicket as India, chasing 387 for victory, overhauled the highest fourth innings chase -- 276 by the West Indies at Delhi in 1987-88 -- on Indian soil on the fifth and final day to go 1-0 up in the two-Test series.
The West Indies hold the record for the highest run chase of 418 for 7, against Australia at St. John's in 2003. India is second in the list for successfully chasing 406 against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1976. The only other team to score more than 400 runs in the fourth innings is Australia, who scored 404-3 against England at Leeds in 1948.
The teams now travel to Mohali for the second Test, beginning on December 19.
It was a remarkable victory, as the hosts had conceded a 75-run first innings lead on a track that did not show signs of any rapid deterioration even on the last day.
After four days of ding-dong battle, the Indians titlted the balance decisively with a professional batting display in the second innings. England were ahead for most part of the game but lost the plot on the last day. Perhaps, they must be ruing their decision to declare their second innings at 311 for 9.
It was man of man of the match Virender Sehwag's explosive knock of 83 off just 68 balls on Sunday that set up victory. Gautam Gambhir (66) was the other notable performer in the memorable run chase.
Tendulkar, who in the process crossed the 1000-run mark this year, played the sheet-anchor role. He used his experience to gather runs mostly through singles and twos, as the bowlers, particularly the spinners, pitched the ball in the right areas.

But Yuvraj, after reading the pitch for a while, continued with India's plan of counter-attack as Tendulkar played a good foil, keeping one end intact.
Resuming at overnight score of 131 for 1, India suffered an early setback when Dravid was out cheaply yet again, edging a delivery from Andrew Flintoff to wicketkeeper Matt Prior in third over of the day.
But Gambhir and Tendulkar took upon the challenge, and at one stage maintained a run rate of around five runs per over, attacking the England bowlers. The duo added 42 runs for the third wicket.
Gambhir (66, 139 balls, 7x4) and Tendulkar never looked under any pressure and took singles and twos while sending the odd bad ball to the ropes.
Tendulkar, in particular, enjoyed his batting as he punished the bowlers whenever they gave him width to play his shots. He survived a half chance soon after India crossed the 150 mark. With Graeme Swann hitting the right areas, the little master stretched to defend but the ball took a sharp turn and hit the outer edge of the bat. Luckily it fell inches in front of Ian Bell at silly point. Tendulkar was on ten then.
Gambhir added 24 runs with Dravid and 42 with Tendulkar, but one lapse in concentration saw him back in the pavilion.
After bowling two short-pitched deliveries in previous over, James Anderson up the pressure on Gambhir, attacking on the off side corridor. The Indian opener moved across and his halfhearted steer ended up to Paul Collingwood , who moved to his left at slips and took a good catch at gully.
Though there was a slight slump in the run flow after the fall of Gambhir, Laxman adapted to the conditions quickly but was in no mood to take any risk against Monty Panesar , who maintained a tight length. He and Tendulkar took the Indian score past 200 in 48.1 overs

The acid attack on two college students in Warangal took another gruesome turn on Friday night, when the three accused in the case were shot dead by the police in an encounter in the outskirts of Warangal. District Superintendent of Police V C Sajjanar said that the three accused S Srinvas Rao, Potharaju Harikrishna and B Sanjay were killed when they attacked the policemen while trying to escape. The police had taken the three youths to a place near Mamnoor hillock, in the outskirts of Warangal, where they had reportedly hidden the material used to target the two engineering students.

Acid attack: Girl may lose eyesight (WARANGAL/HYDERABAD)

WARANGAL/HYDERABAD: Even as the outcry of the public enraged over the acid attack on two engineering students spilled on to the roads, it emerged that 22-year-old Kousetti Swapnika might lose the sight of both her eyes as she battled to survive another day in the hospital on Thursday. The police slapped an attempt-to-murder case against the accused, 28-year-old Shakamuri Srinivas, for the heinous crime.

Yashoda Hospital authorities said in Hyderabad that Swapnika’s condition is very critical as she suffered 55 per cent burns. “She suffered severe burn injuries on face, chest, back and thighs. Though she is able to talk in a feeble voice, she could develop complications later,” a hospital official said.

Asked as to why the police are taking time to arrest even after Swapnika had accused Srinivas of carrying out the dastardly attack, Warangal district SP V C Sajjanar said they were interrogating the accused. He said a case under section 307 (read with section 34) was filed at the Kakatiya University campus police station.

Ironically, father of the accused S Singa Rao felt that no punishment was enough for his son, if found guilty, for carrying out the attack. “It is pathetic to see the faces of the victims as I empathise with their parents who are undergoing immense pain,” he said. The accused was reportedly taken into custody by the police late on Wednesday night. The police, however, are tightlipped whether two others who have helped Srinivas in the brazen act are in their custody.

Meanwhile, anguished by the gravity of the attack, students, activists of women’s organisations and people from different walks of life took to the streets, demanding sternest action against the culprits. Students organisations enforced a bandh of all educational institutions in the district, while a majority of the institutions closed voluntarily to express solidarity with the victims and their families.

Student organisations burnt effigies of the accused at various junctions in Warangal. “Srinivas should be made to suffer the same way by pouring acid on him,” N Jyothi, district president of AP Mahila Samakhya, said.

England wilt after Andrew Strauss's century

Swept away: Cook made a watchful 52 before he was caught at mid-on after mistiming a sweep off Harbhajan

More than anything, Alastair Cook said before the start of this Test match, batting is a mental game and coming to terms with a lack of preparation is little more than a mental adjustment. Nobody illustrated this theory more clearly than his opening partner, Andrew Strauss, yesterday. At first scratchily, then with increasing confidence, he soaked up Indian pressure for four minutes short of six energy-sapping hours, passing 4,000 Test runs in the process and, more significantly, his thirteenth Test hundred.

So central was Strauss to England's opening salvo in this series, it was immediately obvious that his dismissal, a clipped return catch to Amit Mishra, the leg spinner, was the moment that tilted the first day's honours India's way. It came as a shock, such was the assurance with which Strauss was playing, an assurance that suggested he was in the middle of the purplest of patches. In a way he is, this being his third first-class hundred in as many matches. But, of course, there was the small matter of 2 months between his first and second and this, his third.

It is this context - the utterly inadequate nature of the preparation - rather than the beauty of the strokeplay that made Strauss's hundred yesterday such a special effort and which, when he comes to dwell on such things in years to come, will persuade him, surely, that this was one of his very finest performances. It was a pity that, of his colleagues, only Cook found inspiration from his efforts, as a tumescent 164 for one became a flabby 229 for five by close of play.

Momentum began to shift shortly after tea when Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the India captain, finally found, in Zaheer Khan, predictably, and Yuvraj Singh, surprisingly, a combination to halt England's charge. With an accommodating ball, the slightest tilt of his wrist and knowledge gained from years of bowling on lifeless pitches such as these, Zaheer swung the ball this way and that, at will, trapping Ian Bell plumb in front with an in-ducker second ball after tea and then surprising Kevin Pietersen with a bouncer that the England captain spliced up in the air for the bowler to take the simplest of return catches.

It signalled the end of a skittish, eccentric innings from Pietersen that suggested, for all his assurance in front of the press corps, the events of the past ten days and the sleepless nights might well have taken their toll and clouded his normally clear-thinking mind. Usually, Pietersen's nerves are reflected in his kamikaze running at the start of his innings, but yesterday his whole game seemed to be affected as he wandered about his crease, looking thoroughly ill at ease and treating Yuvraj as if he was Derek Underwood on a sticky dog rather than an occasional left-arm spinner with 15 first-class wickets to his name.

Shortly after Pietersen's bizarre innings, Paul Collingwood was the victim of an equally odd bit of umpiring from Billy Bowden, the ball clearly coming off pad instead of bat, before ending up in short leg's hands. Collingwood may feel particularly hard done by, since Bowden sent him on his way in exactly the same fashion last summer at Lord's against South Africa, and may wonder what might have been had the Indian immigration department been able to issue Asad Rauf, the original umpire from Pakistan, his visa in time.

The unavailability of Rauf was just a small reminder that this game was being played in unusual circumstances. The other was the minute's silence just before the off and the black armbands worn by both teams. Not that the moment was charged with any emotional electricity, since there were barely a thousand spectators in the ground at the start. While this was not the kind of ringing endorsement of the decision to play this game so soon after the Mumbai atrocities that we were hoping for, in truth it reflected more the reality of Test cricket in India during these Twenty20 days. The number swelled to about 6,000 by the day's end and the hope is for a proper crowd come the weekend.

Strauss had been one of the first England players to make public his desire to return and play the Tests. Maybe this positive state of mind helped his cause. Certainly he thought so, saying at the end of the day's play: “I was as relaxed as I've felt going into a Test match for a long time. Maybe all the stuff that's been going on as regards security helped take my mind off the pressures of playing Test cricket. I felt pretty comfortable from ball one.”

He may have felt comfortable, but at the start it looked as if he was scratching around like a backyard chook. Things gradually began to come together, but the morning's work was typical Strauss, all nudges and deflections on the leg side, with the occasional sweep off the spinners. In fact, his first off-side runs did not come until after lunch, by which time Harbhajan Singh was in the process of feeding Strauss, time and again, his favourite cut shot and, by doing so, unwittingly helped to induce a greater freedom of strokeplay.

Strauss played the spinners superbly. He talked of “being busy” and indeed he was. Harbhajan, in particular, had no answer as Strauss, determined to play off the back foot, picked the spinner's length as easily as a burglar might a lock, stepping back to cut when he was marginally short and sweeping judiciously when Harbhajan overcompensated. This ability, when set, to turn the strike over almost at will is one reason why Strauss's conversion rate of fifties to hundreds (13 times out of 27) is so good.

Cook's is less so (seven times out of 22), and this is largely because, unlike Strauss, he often gets stuck for long periods against spinners without moving the score forward. Yesterday, there were signs that he was learning to do so. There was evidence of a sweep shot - until now, not one of Cook's strokes - possibly the result of working with the batting coach, Andy Flower, who was one of the game's greatest-ever sweepers.

In fact, it was the sweep stroke that brought Cook's downfall, as he looked to mow Harbhajan away over the leg side, only to see a top edge end up in Zaheer's pouch at mid-on. Cook played well for his 52, but here the mistake was not so much of planning but execution. Cook's innings yesterday included signs that he is becoming a better player of spin, but his downfall reiterated that not everything about batting is in the mind.

CHENNAI: "It is always wonderful to come back to your country and experience the appreciation of your efforts," said World chess champion Viswanathan Anand at the Taj Coromandel here on Thursday.

Anand was speaking at a function organised by the All India Chess Federation to honour his recent victory over Russia’s Vladimir Kramnik in Bonn, Germany that helped him retain the world crown.

Addressing India’s cricket captain M.S. Dhoni, who grinned broadly as he slipped a one-carat diamond ring on the chess player’s finger, Anand remarked: "I think I will accept the ring in a spirit of brotherhood."

He also wished Dhoni and the Indian cricket team luck in their ongoing encounter against England. “Good luck for the next four days, though I hope it gets over in three,” he said.

Perfect icon

Earlier, Dhoni waxed eloquent on Anand’s achievement. "Every sport needs an icon, and I cannot think of a better person than Anand in chess.

“If youngsters have a role model like him, there is no reason for them to not succeed," he said.

Dhoni also said that Anand’s triumph was a great occasion for the entire country and that he was “honoured to share the dais” with such a phenomenal achiever. "But I will beat him at chess if he plays left-handed," he quipped. The AICF and TNCA president N. Srinivasan said it was not often that a country or city could lay claim on a talent as exquisite as Anand’s.

Humble

"One is amazed at his ability to retain focus and attention despite all these years. What is even more laudable is that he has always been a very humble person," he added.

AICF secretary D.V. Sundar said Anand was "the only Indian who had kept the country in contention at the international level for nearly two decades".

The chess player was also presented bouquets by Indian chess champions in various age categories.

She is a superstar on this side of the Vindhyas. And now she is making a dream debut in Bollywood opposite the perfectionist Aamir Khan in the Hindi remake of the film Ghajini. Asin couldn't have asked for more.

When Aamir saw Asin in the original Ghajini, he was impressed with her talent and beauty so much so that the actor requested director A R Murugadoss to repeat her in the Hindi version as well.

Asin is happy that she has been able to embrace the throbbing diversity of the Indian film industry with élan.

Having debuted in Malayalam film Narendaran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka, Asin ventured out to act in Tamil, Telugu, now Hindi and also a multi-lingual film — 19th Step, made under Walt Disney Banner, along with Kamal Haasan and Japanese actor Asano. “This film is still in the pre-production stage,” Asin says and adds that she is privileged to have worked with Kamal Haasan, first in Dasavathaaram and now in 19th Step. Asin is also doing another Bollywood film London Dreams’ directed by Vipul Shah, with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan.

Being fluent in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, English, Hindi, Sanskrit and French gives Asin an edge over others who have language barriers. “For all the films, I have dubbed in my own voice. Working on such a wide spectrum has broadened my perspective,'” she says with pride.

Asin is eagerly waiting for Ghajini to release on the Christmas day. Throwing light on the Hindi version, Asin says, “The story is same but action sequence is different and there is little change in climax. My character, Kalpana remains untouched.”

Not many have good words to share about Aamir after working with him but Asin thinks otherwise. “Working with Aamir was a fabulous experience. He was supportive and encouraging. He is passionate about his work and yet he is simple and down to earth,” Asin raves.

Asin did have a bout of controversy during the making of the film which she rubbishes as a load of claptrap. It was reported that she was miffed for not being allowed to interact with the media earlier? “I had no issues with that. The marketing people wanted me to interact only when the film was nearing its release,” she avers.
Regarding the rift that she had with her co-star Jiah Khan on the sets, as she wanted keep an eye on her role, Asin says, “That's ridiculous and funny. We share no screen space in the film. I was never there on the sets when Jiah was shooting. I've met her twice and we share a cordial relationship. I'm trying to get used to the Bollywood media. Let me tell you, I’m a very secure person.”

Hailing from Kochi, Asin’s brush with glamour world started at the tender age of 14. “I was in 9th std when I started modelling. Till now, I've done more than 60 commercials — both print and TV.” She has been the face of many big brands since then and it was no surprise when she appeared on the cover of Vogue India in its July issue. “I'm the first South Indian actress to be featured and it feels nice,” tells Asin.

About her association with Bangalore, she says, “I had recently come to Bangalore for an event promotion. It’s a beautiful City and I’ve school friends who are settled there. I'm looking forward to coming there for the promotion of Ghajini.’’

Pakistan today ruled out handing over to India any of its citizens found to be linked to the mumbai attacks and warned that it was fully prepared for war in the event of a military confrontation in the wake of the terrorist strike.

Though Pakistani will fully cooperate with India in investigating the Mumbai attacks, any Pakistani individual found to be involved in the incident will be tried under the country's laws, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said.

"The arrests are being made for our own investigations. Even if allegations are proved against any suspect, he will not be handed over to India," Qureshi told reporters after offering Eid prayers in his hometown of Multan.

"No arrested Pakistani would be handed over to India," he said.

Asked about the arrest of leaders and members of banned groups like Lashker-e-Taiba in a crackdown launched on Sunday, Qureshi said they were apprehended due to efforts made by intelligence agencies as part of the government's commitment that Pakistan's soil would not be used for terrorist activities directed against any other country.

"We will proceed against those arrested under Pakistani laws," he said.

Qureshi said Pakistan did not want military confrontation but would defend itself if war was imposed on it.

"We do not want to impose war, but we are fully prepared in case war is imposed on us," he said.

"It is our desire that there should be no war...We want friendship, we want peace and we want stability, but our desire for peace should not be considered Pakistan's weakness," he added.

Qureshi said the government had made it clear that Pakistan was not involved in any way in the Mumbai attacks. Islamabad had also made an offer to jointly investigate the

Mumbai attacks with India but had not yet received a response from the Indian side, he said.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar confirmed the arrest of LeT commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of Mumbai attacks, and Jaish-e-Mohammed founder Maulana Masood Azhar. In an interview with CNN-IBN channel, Mukhtar said Pakistan could consider the "joint interrogation" of the terror suspects with India.

Pakistan has arrested over 20 members of the LeT and its front organisation Jamaat-ud-Dawah since Sunday while the Jaish founder was placed under house arrest yesterday, sources said. Officials said the crackdown on banned militant groups

will continue and more arrests are expected.

Armed forces are put on war alert

In the sort of “high alert” last seen during Operation Parakram, launched after the December 13, 2001, attack on Parliament, the armed forces, especially the air force and the navy, have been kept in a state of war readiness. There has been no massive mobilisation of troops on the border, though.

While Indian Air Force (IAF) fighters have been mounted with bombs and kept in a state of readiness to take off within minutes, almost the entire western naval fleet is aggressively patrolling the Arabian Sea.

The military was moved into this state of heightened alert within 24 hours of the terror attack on Mumbai, which began on November 26. When it became clear that the terrorists were Pakistanis, the government ordered the mobilisation.

According to a source, the IAF has recalled senior officers from leave, moved some of its missile formations forward, and armed its fighters with missiles. Pilots have been put on standby in operational rooms.

To justify the state of war readiness, the government spoke of the possibility of a 911-style attack on India. At a meeting with the three service chiefs, defence minister AK Antony cautioned them to take measures to thwart such an attack. But a source said the alert was a cover to justify India’s exceptional military mobilisation.

The forces have been put on high alert to back up India’s diplomatic efforts to get Pakistan to crack down on terrorists on its soil.

The IAF says it is in state of “passive air defence (PAD)”, which means it is geared to take any measure to defend the country’s assets. Under PAD, all platforms, including fighters, are kept operationally ready, armed with missiles, and pilots are prepared to fly at a moment’s notice.

CHENNAI: Unprecedented security arrangements have been made for the India-England cricket Test match to be played at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here from Thursday.

Players of both teams have arrived, and police have intensified vigil at the stadium and at the hotel where they are accommodated.

At a high-level meeting on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police K. Radhakrishnan reviewed the security arrangements.

“About 3,000 police personnel have been deployed for bandobust, including traffic management. Surveillance cameras will be installed at vantage points in and around the stadium. A list of dos and don’ts has been issued to players and spectators. The police have taken over the stadium and the hotel,” he said.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said special teams were deployed strategically to handle emergency situations. “In the event of an exigency, we have ‘Quick Reaction Teams’ to carry out the evacuation process. The players are being protected by armed commandos,” he said.

Spotter police constables trained in identifying habitual offenders and extremist elements would be deployed during the days of the test match.

There was commotion at the hotel when one of the Indian players objected to the tough security measures on Tuesday, a senior police official said. “The fifth floor is a restricted zone where visitors are not allowed. Even as security personnel were trying to explain, the player took a visitor to the fifth floor without allowing the police to carry out the mandatory frisking. An entry has been made in the local police station records about the incident. We are taking up the matter with the Security Manager of the Indian Team and Tamil Nadu Cricket Association officials,” the official added.

Security beefed up at New Delhi airport after terror scare

The security at the New Delhi Gandhi airport was thrown into a state of high alert in the early hours of Friday following the reported hearing of gunshots.

But none of the authorities confirmed the incident as yet.

The scare followed a passenger claiming to have heard sound of two gunshots firing at around 1.15 am near gate no 4, but there was no eyewitness, Udayan Banerjee, Commissioner of Security for Airports (COSA) told PTI.

However, the airport was already on a high alert following intelligence warning that there could be a terror attack or a hijack ahead of the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary tomorrow.

The Quick Reaction Team (QRT) of the CISF swung into action along with Delhi Police immediately after the reported incident.

"We received a call that some passengers heard a sound similar to two gunshots, but there were no eyewitnesses. No evidence has so far come up to suggest that it was a firing and we cannot confirm it as a gunshot," Banerjee said.

"After the sound, the CISF and the Delhi police swung into action and intensified the checking at the airport," he said.

The area outside departure terminal was completely cordoned off with AK 47 and INSAS rifle toting CISF and Delhi Police commandos taking control of the entire premises.

Banerjee said, while the checking was going on, a white colour Qualis car jumped the queue and sped away adding to the confusion.

Police gypsy chased the car, but lost it after some time, he added.

When asked whether the number plate was noticed, Banerjee said, "We are not really sure about the number plate but I was told it was an HR (Haryana) registration vehicle."

While the car sped away, the Delhi Police and the Haryana Police have been alerted for a lookout of the white vehicle.

According to the police, no bullet shells were recovered during the combing operation and neither any bullet mark found in the airport area.

Meanwhile, movement at the airport, including the flight operations were put on hold for nearly 45 minutes, he said adding it was resumed there after.

The normal rush at the airport continued with the passengers movement on the airport going smooth, an airport official said.

Some other reports say the entire incident could have been a part of the mock drill to check the security preparedness at the airport.

However, the security has been beefed up at the airport with the deployment of additional security personnel.

Two more arrested for Mumbai terror attacks

Two more men, Tausif Rehman and Mukhtar Ahmed, have been arrested in connection with the deadly terror attacks that rocked Mumbai killing morethan 180 people.

Tausif was arrested from West Bengal, while Mukhtar -- a Jammu and Kashmir police constable, was hand picked up by the Kolkata police, according to a Times Now report.

The duo were arrested by the special task force of the Kolkata police.

Both Tausif and Mukhtar are believed to be associated with the SIM cards used by the Mumbai terrorists.

Earlier, intelligence sources said they had intercepted conversations between Muzammil, Muzaffarabad chief of LeT operations, and a certain Yahya in Bangladesh.

Yahya reportedly arranged SIM cards, fake id-cards primarily from western countries like Mauritius, UK, US, Australia. A Mauritian identity card was found on one of the terrorists shot down.

New leads into the Mumbai terror attacks have revealed that the two bombs that went off at Vile Parle and Wadi Bandar were planted by slain terrorist Ismail Khan and his associate Mohammad Ajmal Amir Iman, who is in police custody.
ATS sources told rediff.com that this revelation was made by Mohammad Ajmal Amir Iman during his interrogation on Tuesday.
He says that the bombs (improvised explosive devices) were manufactured before they left Pakistan. Each terrorist carried IEDs and they had instructions to blow up specific places during their mission.
The ATS officials found IEDs near the Taj Mahal Hotel too.

Amir Iman, who is also known as Kasab, told his interrogators that the idea was to create as much chaos as possible apart and terrorising the entire city. He informed the ATS that the explosives were assembled by his associate, Ismail Khan, and he planted the bombs at two locations.

ATS sources say that they are not sure if the terrorists wanted to blow up Hotel Taj Mahal, but added that they wanted to cause the maximum possible damage.
Iman further revealed that they were instructed to return to Pakistan at any cost.
Otherwise, "our commanders promised to take care of our families and ordered that we should die fighting during the operation", he told the ATS officials.
Iman refused to divulge information on any local module and insisted that the entire operation was planned at Pakistan.
ATS officials suspect that Iman might not know anything about the local modules, as his bosses might not have informed him about them.
Each terrorist was given a specific amount of information, which is needed to carry out their attack. The investigating agencies feel that the video clippings of the targeted locations may have been shot by local modules and sent across to Pakistan. These clippings were shown to these men, who carried out the attack at these places.
An ATS official said that it is extremely necessary for them to crack the local module, which helped carry out this attack.
"The man in our custody tried to mislead us and there are certain statements by him are contradictory in nature."
ATS officials suspect that the terrorist might have been trained in withholding information during interrogations.
This tactic, introduced by armies across the world, was picked up by terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Tayiba and the Students Islamic Movement of India.
The ATS says that they are awaiting the forensic results for further investigations.

NEW DELHI: The Mumbai terror attacks were originally planned for September 27 but Lashkar mastermind Zakiur Rahman suddenly aborted the plot, arrested terrorist ajmal amir has told his interrogators.
He also said that Abu Hamza, the Lashkar jihadi who carried out the attack on Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, had, citing his own example, reassured that the gang would get away after the strike on Mumbai.
Five IM members were arrested in Mumbai on September 24 in the aftermath of the Delhi blasts and the Lashkar bosses and their ISI handlers thought the operation might fail in the face of heightened police vigil, Ajmal said.
Ajmal's interrogation report says that the terrorists were instructed by Zakiur (47) and his deputy Kafa (30) to carry out the attacks in Mumbai on the 27th day of Ramzan, which was on September 27, but the plan changed after several IM members were rounded up in various parts of the country.
The disclosure by the arrested terrorist may appear to tie in with the intelligence alert sounded by RAW on September 18 about a possible attempt by Lashkar to attack Mumbai by the sea route.
Because of the changed plan, the gang set out for Mumbai on November 23 on board the Lashkar ship, Al Hussaini. According to Ajmal, all members of the crew were jihadis.
The 10 terrorists, after finishing their training, were instructed by their bosses to assemble at Karachi where they stayed for over two months before leaving for Mumbai.
"Ajmal told us that they were not allowed to read newspapers and watch TV during the time they stayed in Karachi and were given some magazines which were translated from Urdu to Hindi to sharpen their Hindi," said a source.
The cops also found a fake college ID card from Ajmal with his photograph and name as Samir Chaudhary. The card was reportedly issued from Arunodaya PG college in Bangalore. Cops said that Ismail, the terrorist gunned down at Chowpatty, also carried a fake ID in the name of Naresh Verma.
The Bangalore connection takes on significance because of the revelation by Ajmal about Abu Hamza's complicity in the jihadi plot against Mumbai.
Ajmal told his interrogators that Ismail (25) had guided the hijacked fishing trawler, Kuber, after killing the captain Amarsinh Solanki and brought it to Mumbai with the help of a GPS navigation map. He also said that the killer squad of 10 was accompanied by five others on the Lashkar ship Al Husseini. The five returned after taking control of Kuber and its crew members.
Ajmal said the men told Ismail that they had killed the "bakras" (referring to the four crew members of Kuber) and asked him to kill Solanki later.
Ajmal's interrogation report said he strayed into terrorism from a career as a petty criminal. Coming from an extremely poor family and having had a troubled childhood, he joined a Lashkar camp after seeing their pamphlets and discovered that he had found his calling. He went through the LeT's rigorous training programmes and finally found himself on the boat to Mumbai.
"Ajmal is the third of five siblings. His father Mohammad Amir pulls a cart in Faridkot near Multan while his elder brother Afzal stays in Lahore and works as a labourer. His mother Noor Elahi is a housewife and his elder sister is married. A younger sister and a brother stay in Faridkot with the parents," an officer of Mumbai's ATS said.
Due to poverty, Ajmal left his house in 2005 and move to Lahore. Cops said that his family was given Rs 1.50 lakh after he was roped into terrorism.

ICL calls off World Series in lieu of terror attacks

The Indian Cricket League has called off ICL T20 World Series League indefinitely in the wake of Mumbai terror attacks. The decision to annul the event was taken at a board meeting between all the board members of the ICL with Gujarat government officials, held on Thursday afternoon.
"The ICL executive board decided it was not appropriate to continue," Executive Board member and tournament director Kiran More said. "We were ready with the extra security but felt the atmosphere in the wake of the Mumbai events was just not right to go ahead with the matches."
Earlier in the day, the league had cancelled Thursday’s match in wake of heightened security.
“Today`s match between Pakistan and Bangladesh has been cancelled in view of the deadly Mumbai terror attacks," More had said.
The former India stumper added that the overseas players were a little disturbed by the developments.
Mumbai witnessed large scale terror strikes at high-profile hotels and establishments since last night in which already more than 100 people have been killed and several injured.
The attacks have already had repercussions on England`s on-going India tour and the series now, likely to be called off after English cricketers expressed apprehensions on continuing with the tour.
England have so far played five one-dayers of the seven-match series and have lost all the matches to trail the seven-match series 0-5. They were also scheduled to play two Tests in Ahmedabad (December 11-15) and Mumbai (December 10-23).

The terror attacks on Mumbai has shaken many to the core, but very few of us are actively doing something to better the situation.
Composer Vishal Dadlani [Images] of the Vishal-Shekhar duo has taken up a cause that he believes will protect the lives of the security forces during anti-terrorism operations.
He has taken a stand against the live telecast by news television channels, which he says, exposed the plans of the military and National Security Guard as they tried to overwhelm the terrorists and rescue hostages.
Vishal tells Ronjita Kulkarni why he took up this cause.
What made you take up this issue?
Watching the live minute-by-minute broadcast of what was going on with the (armed) forces, what they were planning, how they were entering (the buildings), their strategies, their positions was very fascinating, but very morbid as well because it may have been available to the terrorists as well. And that's very dangerous for national security.
This information should be classified but the television channels were broadcasting it. They were trying to outdo each other in getting closer to the action and giving more details. They pointed their cameras away about 40 hours into the operation -- maybe because the ministry instructed them to do so.
As a citizen of the country, I felt that our forces lost a certain element of surprise by being put in a position where every movement was aired live on television. And I figured no one else would do anything about it, so I decided to give my time. I've put up a petition, created a Web site, I have legal advisors... I'm going to take it as far as it goes, and hopefully, the courts will issue directives to enforce a certain code of conduct.
I don't want to blame any channel. Whatever has happened has happened. We are all in a sad and angry time right now. But if this, god forbid, were to happen in future, we need to be prepared. We cannot have our forces put in a position of disadvantage by our own channels.
And we should not allow terrorists carry out their propaganda on our channels (by airing a live phone call from a terrorist). That is unacceptable.
The channels should not be calling guests (in the Taj Mahal hotel and the Trident hotel) and giving out their positions -- that these are the locations of the biggest suits where the richest people could be hiding. They're actually doing a major disservice. I don't know how much of the coverage actually affected the forces but I know it could have. We should plug this leak once and for all, so that it never happens again.

Karkare’s last wish

Transfer me out of ATSHe met RR Patil barely an hour before his deathMUMBAI: Barely an hour before he was felled by terrorists, Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare had pleaded with state home minister RR Patil to move him to some other department. At one point during the meeting, he went to the extent of saying he wanted to quit the service.
Karkare gave vent to his emotions at a meeting the ATS team had with Patil, which ended around 9 pm that fateful night on Wednesday. Karkare told the minister he was fed up of working in the squad after the political pressure the team faced in the Malegaon blast investigation.
“He was not worried about the work pressure, but the political pressure and nasty allegations had upset him. Patil assured him that things would be set right in the next few days,” said an official closely related to transfers of officials.
The meeting was held at Patil’s official bungalow Chitrakut, and Karkare was on his way back home when he got information about the attack outside CST.
This was not the first time Karkare expressed his anguish. A few weeks earlier too he had sought a transfer. Patil and officials in the home department had convinced him to stay on, saying his experience in the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) and the way he was leading the investigations were invaluable.
